Tips And Tricks: Cooling Your Server Rack

Server Cooling

Networking parts generate plenty of heat in order to operate, especially when it comes to servers. Moreover, they do not really have too much room for a proper aeration. When the heat cannot be dissipated and the cold air cannot get inside, server components are exposed to failure. They also end up with a drastically limited lifespan. The worst part is that heat generated problems do not occur overnight. Instead, the process might extend over weeks and even months. This is why cooling your server rack is an actual necessity.

Rack Positioning In Rapport With Surrounding Objects

The rack must be placed for the server to actually breathe. Most commonly, hot air is evacuated through the back. Therefore, you have to allow at least ten inches between the unit and a wall or a piece of furniture. Make sure that cables do not interfere with the airflow either. At the same time, new units have lateral lids with small holes for ventilation. Therefore, allow some air for cold air admission too.

Surprisingly enough, a lot of desks are not projected for an optimal cooling process, so make sure that you pay attention to what you spend your money on.

Opening The Unit

Server racks can be easily opened with a screwdriver and a little patience, only to ensure a more appropriate airflow. Sometimes, removing the rack doors might be more than enough. Besides, you may also invest in perforated doors, but keep in mind that such holes must be large enough. As long as the hot air can be dissipated in the room temperature, a set of perforated doors and the internal cooling systems can ensure an excellent job.

Installing Small Radiators

Radiators can be easily installed on the overused servers that tend to overheat. The size of a radiator is directly proportional with the area where-through the heat is eliminated. In the end, the temperature is not just lower, but also constant. Since it is not always indicated by a thermometer, it might be a smart idea to complete it with a ventilator.

Monitor The Temperature

Keep an eye on the temperature by installing a small thermometer. If the temperature goes too high, you may turn on one of the improvised cooling systems around the server rack. On the other hand, you may just as well opt for smart fans with varying speeds, depending on the temperature. If it goes too high, the fan moves faster. They might seem a little expensive, but they can save a lot of trouble.

Block The Front Part

A blank panel used to block the front part of each rack will work wonders on the temperature. The hot air is not supposed to circulate, but to dissipate. When you feel a high temperature in front of the rack, it obviously circulates, so try to prevent this phenomenon with a few panels.

In conclusion, cooling server rack is not the most sophisticated job in the world, but it obviously asks for a little dedication. However, a successful cooling process will most likely save your server or perhaps your business.
