The Micromax Canvas 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos were released very closed to each other. The Canvas 2 came in first at the end of 2012 and hence is bit lower on the specs as well as the price. Both the phones are in the race to take the top slot for a dual SIM Indian phone. So have a look at the spec shoot out below.
To begin with the Grand Duos has a better processor 1.2 GHz against the 1 GHz Dual-Core on the Canvas 2. However you don’t feel the difference as both the phones provide smooth operation without lags.
2) Memory and Storage
The Grand Duos outruns the Canvas 2 in the memory category too. The Samsung phone has 1 GB RAM compared to 512 MB on the Canvas 2. Again the Grand Duos has a built in 8 GB memory whereas the Canvas 2 has just 4 GB. However the capacity on both the phones can be extended using microSD cards to 64 GB on the Duos and 32 GB on the Canvas. The Micromax Canvas 2 price being on the lower side loses out on the memory aspect.
The Canvas 2 and the Grand Duos look almost alike; the Micromax is a millimeter thicker and a couple of millimeters longer.
The OS on the Samsung Grand Duos is latest Jelly Bean Android 4.1.2 out of the box. The Canvas 2 comes with the Ice Cream Sandwich version; however it is upgradeable to the Jelly Bean.
The Canvas 2 phone is equipped with a 8 MP, 3264×2448 pixels, autofocus, LED flash camera. The Grand Duos matches the camera specs except that we have a Full HD 1080p video recording along with stereo sound and image stabilization on the Samsung phone. The Canvas front end camera is plain VGA compared to a 2 mp on the Duos.
The Canvas 2 houses a 5 inch IPS touchscreen display supporting a screen resolution of 480 x 854 pixels with a pixel density of 196 ppi whereas Grand Duos has a 5 inch TFT LCD touchscreen display that has a screen resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and has a pixel density of 157 ppi. The Duos fares better with a multi touch screen. The ambient light sensor on the Duos gives it an edge over the Canvas with the IPS.
The Grand Duos has better connectivity features like better Bluetooth support, GLONAS along with A-GPS, HSPA with higher connectivity speed, but the clincher is the Wi-Fi Hotspot provided by the Duos.
The Battery on both the phones have a capacity around 2000 mAh, however the Samsung phone proves to run longer than the Micromax phone. Possibly it utilizes the power saving features of the Jelly Bean version.
Now that we have gone through the specs we can form an opinion. The main thing to consider is, are we willing to pay more for the Duos for the marginally extra benefit? The lower RAM on the Canvas 2 is a deal breaker if one is inclined to run some serious apps. Otherwise the Canvas seems to give good value for money.
